Had a wonderful Indian breakfast in the hotel with parathas and curry and then went exploring. Below are some pictures from that expedition.
So much of what I had heard about India from others prepared me for a culture shock of poverty and dirt and masses of people. But there is a surprising orderliness and even cleanliness of a kind about downtown Delhi. Of course its a developing country so all the dirt and masses of people are there. But, if you can get over the mad scramble of half finished buildings, broken sidewalks and beggars, there is wonderful energy about the place that is invigorating and fun. People are truly friendly, even when they are trying to scam you, maybe especially then. There is a service mentality at this hotel that would put Toronto and a few European capitals I can think of to shame. Despite that, I am very conscious of my status as tourist and observer. This can be a heartless place if you are not lucky with status and family and connections and it would be a disservice to Delhi if i were to view it all through a rose coloured lens.

Our India
Cameron, Chris and Heather will travel to Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh, during the 3 days before Alex arrives. We meet Alex and then set out from Delhi in the north. We travel mainly in Rajasthan, in what is called the Golden Triangle. We will visit the Taj Mahal in Agra, Jodhpur, Jaipur, often called the Pink City, Udaipur with a Palace that sits in the middle of a lake, and Pushkar, which every year has a big camel fair. Then Alex and Chris return home to university. Heather and Cameron continue and tour through parts of the south, starting in Chennai and Madurai, both in Tamil Nadu. We drive through the Western Ghats arriving in Cochin and the backwaters of Kerala. Mumbai ends our trip and home to Canada.
